It is the common custom within many Afrikan societies to give a newborn child a name that reflects the circumstances, reasons, and even the day that they were born on. Here I give a comprehensive list of the Akan and Ewe-Fon day-names. Besides providing one with the opportunity to obtain a name that reflects their birth day/date, this information is also an obvious example of the cultural unity of these two West Afrikan cultures. It is an example of why we should move away from the new tribalism that we find ourselves in in this day and time towards a more unified Afrikan identity. It is what we call New Afrikan Spirituality.
Below is a list of the Ewe-Fon and Akan names of the days of the week, the Ewe-Fon and Akan names, both male and female, that accompany them, and the meanings of the names. If you are trying to find out which day you were born on and the name that accompanies it, click on the links below according to your gender(This tool is provided through Kwame Safro's site African Philosophy and African Horoscope) directly above the table of names. The link is to a javascript program that allows you to simply put in your date of birth and click to automatically generate the corresponding name and its meaning. You will find that the link is Akan-based, but the meanings of the names in both Akan and Ewe-Fon (Dahomean) are the same. Simply put, if you chose an Ewe-Fon name all you have to do is apply the meaning found on the link to the Ewe-Fon name. It's that simple. Also, there will be a slight difference in spelling between the two as well as there are regional differences in spelling amongst the Akan themselves. To find out the Afrikan spiritual description of your name then go to the corresponding day name link under the coloumn entitled "Day of Week Ewe-Fon/Akan.
It is imperative that we use our own Afrikan deep systems of thought to define and apply meaning to life. Many of us do not even know that there exists an Afrikan "astrology" that is spiritual based and a product of our own heritage. I here present the rudiments of that "astrology" based on the day names of the Fon and the Akan. I hope that for those of you that are or are not directly involved with the Afrikan traditions that this information will be the beginning of an experience that helps you on your path.
One final note. It is also very important that we use the Afrikan concept of time in order to ascertain our correct Kra din, or Soul/Day names. In short, Afrikans (pre-foreigner influenced) have started their days at SUNRISE. So, if you are born at 2 am on a EUROPEAN Monday then you are actually a Sunday born according to Afrikan time reckoning.
